WHAT IS THE DODGE POETRY FESTIVAL ?
"The Dodge Poetry Festival is widely acknowledged as the largest poetry event in North America, representing the most eminent poets from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These four-day celebrations of poetry have been called 'poetry heaven' by former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass, 'a new Woodstock' by the Christian Science Monitor, and simply 'Wordstock' by The New York Times." HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT DAY - October 19th, 2018
"The heart of the Dodge Poetry Festival, High School Student Day introduces thousands of teenagers to poets from widely diverse backgrounds, offering them the opportunity to see the world from perspectives entirely unlike their own. It also offers many students the rare opportunity to meet working poets who are like them, and to experience first‐hand that there is a larger world of like‐minded people who welcome and understand them. This is exciting, inspiring and liberating for all of them, and life‐saving for some.
Although the Festival Poets on High School Student Day include former U.S. Poets Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winners, they are chosen not only for their talent, but for their ability to connect with students. The atmosphere of the day is one of mutual respect and generosity. As always, there will be a variety of simultaneous events, including readings, Poets on Poetry sessions, storytelling, musicians and discussions with over 50 poets, from the widely celebrated to some of the most promising and engaging younger voices." ` Dodgepoetry.org
How did Marist High School get invited ?!!
Here is a letter written by our EDITOR requesting that THE SHIELD / MHS be invited to attend this prestigious event.
Dear Dodge Poetry Foundation:
Dancing ! That is what the students at Marist High School were doing on the eve of their website launch. How thrilled they were about their written works! Recently we revived THE SHIELD, from a once paper copy publication to an online Student Newspaper / Blog / Magazine.
...As moderator of the Journalism Club, at Marist High School, I continue to stress the importance of publishing facts and relevant news. The current political climate has made this even more crucial. I believe however, that it is also imperative to keep poetry in the forefront.
My sentiments echo that of John F. Kennedy’s.
"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses." ~ J. F. K. I believe that our Students deserve the right to experience The Festival and all it has to offer: JOY
EMPATHY & REAWAKENING “How does Marist stand out in a crowd ?”
Marist High School prides its self in being one of the most diverse and all inclusive High Schools in the State of NJ. Our students body consists of a rainbow of students from a multitude of ethnic backgrounds, including students from Asia who have come miles and miles to our campus to study abroad...
If you research our school you will come to find a myriad of reasons why it is a truly special place...You will also come to know that we are a private catholic school. We strive to feed the students' intellectual minds and guide them towards spiritual soundness. I believe prayer and Poetry play a role here. Poetry in a sense is a form of prayer. The Psalms are a true testament to that.
In conclusion, if you look onto THE SHIELD you will see the beginnings of a compelling, artful and modern student publication. We value and respect the written word. We hope that you will honor us with an invitation to your Festival. Our Journalism Club consists of more than twenty solid citizens eager to hear the words of experienced and inspiring authors. We would dance and sing with happiness should you decide to welcome us with open arms.
With gratitude, Melida Rodas
